The Gallery, West Hampstead
Tucked away just around the corner from West Hampstead tube station, The Gallery is a lively bar with a great selection of beer, wine and whisky. They also have a brand new Sunday lunch menu which includes a whole beer can chicken!
The staff are extremely welcoming, and very keen to talk you through some of the options or to give you a taster of one of the beers on tap.
The bar is well known for it’s whisky range, including some very special whisky cocktails. The table service is quick and friendly.
Caol Ila was our whisky of choice and for fans of whisky is definitely one to try.
The whisky sour with Caol Ila at The Gallery was outstanding. Fiona chose the smoky version, which had a beautiful smoked after taste. We also had a Tommy’s margarita, which was up there with the best margarita’s I’ve tasted in London. Tommy’s margarita was invented by Tequila legend Julio Bermejo at Tommy’s Mexican Restaurant in San Francisco, which uses Agave Nectar instead of orange liqueur.
The beer menu at The Gallery, with a nice range depending on your mood. The Wolfpack lager was founded by Al and Chris (two rugby players from Saracens) – and let’s face it, rugby players know their beers!
After sampling the range of beers on tap I decided with the Beavertown neck oil session IPA, which was light, refreshing slightly hoppy. Perfect for a spring evening.
A pint of refreshing Beavertown Neck Oil Session IPA.
After a few beers, cocktails and whisky tasting it was time for the food. For a bar that specialises in whisky, I was not expecting the food to be so good. The menu consisted of smaller plates (which you’re encouraged to order 2-3 per person) or sharing dishes which are packed full.
We started with the BBQ Squid.
Then came the boneless fried chicken sharing platter which was more chicken than we could possibly eat. Despite that we tried very hard and actually took the remains home with us. The chicken was tender inside with a nice crisp on the outside and definitely worth a visit to try.
Not to be beaten we accompanied the chicken with fries topped with a beer infused cheese which were possibly the best cheesy fries in London.
Overall The Gallery is a great choice for a date, with a lively but intimate atmosphere and a host of great beer, whisky and food options to boot.
