Point Nemo: Travel To The Farthest Place On Earth

Do you know that 71% of Earth’s surface is covered by water?

29% of land consists of all islands and continents. There is one point on Earth that is farthest from all the continents and the islands of the Earth. The nearest human from this point is the astronauts inside the International Space Station. From this point, all the countries and cities are too far to reach. We are talking about the Point Nemo.

The Point Nemo is located in the Pacific Ocean. Scientifically, these types of points are known as the oceanic pole of inaccessibility. Point Nemo is the remotest point on the planet Earth. Its name is not inspired by any fish-related movie. Point Nemo got its name from the Captain Nemo of the well-known sea sailor Jules Verne’s 20000 Leagues Under the Sea fictional story of 1928. Point Nemo is situated at 48°52.6′S 123°23.6′W. The nearest landmass from the Point Nemo is Ducie Island of the Easter Islands that is 1670.24576 miles away from the Point Nemo. In the South direction, the nearest landmass is Antarctica. For a ship in the ocean, it is the toughest to reach due to its distance. In Latin language and its literature, the meaning of Nemo is No man.

Technically, Point Nemo is not an Island or a piece of the landmass. That’s why you cannot physically observe it like an island. Point Nemo is comparatively lacking life. It is an unseen place on the surface of the planet like a lot of latitudes and longitudes. Latitudes are lines, Similarly, the Point Nemo is a coordinate point. This imaginary point has come into existence in the year of 1992. It was discovered by Hrvoje Lukatela of Canada. He was a geographical survey researcher. He did not go there to find out anything. He pointed it using geo-spatial technology at that time. Since that year, the Point Nemo is very popular among researchers. At the end of the last century, scientists had recorded some unfamiliar sound nearby Point Nemo. Later, they find out that the noise was from the disintegration of an iceberg.
Due to the absence of any population nearby this point, it is the best place for rocket and missile experiments. But these experiments will become hazardous for the marine life of the oceans. There are rumors that around a hundred retire spacecraft are present in this place.
